ONLINE FRAUD AND INTERNET THEFT: Don’t Fall Victim to “Phishing”
There's a new type of Internet fraud called "phishing." It's pronounced "fishing" and that's exactly what these online criminals are doing: "fishing" for your personal financial information. What they want are your account numbers, passcodes, Social Security numbers, debit card numbers, credit card numbers, and other confidential information that they can use to steal from your checking or savings account or run up bills on your credit cards.

These phishing emails generally urge you to click on a link directing you to phony websites which resemble those of legitimate companies or pop-up windows that ask you to enter, confirm, or update personal information.

BankAtlantic will NEVER ask you to enter personal or account information in an email, or download an attachment from an email. Also, we will never ask you to verify your account number and PIN by phone. Any unsolicited requests for account information you receive through emails or pop-up windows should not be considered a request from BankAtlantic.
Recognizing email fraud:
It's often difficult to tell if an email is legitimate. Many of these emails use logos, formats and phrases that are similar to legitimate emails. Here are a few key items to watch out for:

There may be a false sense of urgency. Typically, these emails include urgent requests for information to get people to react immediately. Messages threatening to terminate or suspend your account without your quick response should be treated as suspicious.

  • There may be links to phony websites. These links may take you to spoof sites or pop-up windows that ask you to enter, confirm or update information. Legitimate companies like BankAtlantic will never ask for personal or financial information in an email. If you are concerned about your account or suspect that the message might not be authentic, contact the organization in the email using a telephone number you know to be genuine.
  • There may be obvious spelling errors and incorrect grammar. Often the email will contain misspelled words and incorrect grammar to avoid spam filters.

PROTECT YOURSELF: How to Avoid Online Fraud and Identity Theft

  • Do not reply to an email or pop-up message asking for personal or financial information (BankAtlantic will never ask you for such items as your Access ID, Passcode, account number or Social Security Number in an email).
  • Do not fill out forms in email messages that ask for personal or financial information.
  • Delete suspicious emails without opening them. If you do open a suspicious email, do not open any attachments or click on any links it may contain.
  • Keep your computer operating system and Internet browser current.
  • Install and regularly update virus protection software.
  • Ensure that you're using a secure website when submitting sensitive information.
  • Use a unique passcode and change your online passcodes often.
  • Regularly log into your online accounts to ensure that all transactions are legitimate.

Anti-spyware software can help!

  • Installing and regularly updating your spyware protection software can help protect your computer against Phishing attempts through spyware. Spyware is a malicious program that can gather information from your computer activities, such as financial information or transactions, and send them to an unknown source.
