Back-To-School Savings Tips
Back-to-school shopping has grown to an over $10 billion industry in the United States, with the average household spending about $150 per year on school supplies and other needed items. However, if you know how to shop, where to look and start shopping now, there are incredible savings to be had.
“With expenses and costs rising and the economy slumping, it is more important than ever to make every dollar count when planning and making back-to-school purchases this year,” commented Jarett Levan, CEO of BankAtlantic. “Sending your children back to school this year can cost significantly less by following this checklist of easy savings tips.”
• ___ Check at home for supplies that were not used during the previous school year. You may already have some new and unopened items.
• ___ Get creative and shop local. There are deals to be had on supplies from retailers in our community.
• ___ Give your children a budget for back-to-school shopping; setting limits prevents overspending.
• ___ Remember, brand name items on a teacher’s supplies shopping list are just a preference. In many cases, an “off brand” or generic item are virtually the same.
• ___ Buy “off-season.” Stores generally offer their best sales before school opens from the first week of July through the first week of August. Also, since most generic items repeat year after year, don’t wait until late August to receive the teacher supplies list to buy everything.
• ___ Check if your child’s school offers a lunch package for the entire year. Some schools do and it is cheaper to buy the package than individual lunch every day.
• ___ No need to buy book covers- paper grocery bags or even wrapping paper will do the trick.
• ___ Know the essentials- as much as your child may want a 100-pack of colored markers, they probably don’t need it.
• ___ Encourage your child to carry a lunch box- this is more environmentally-friendly and less expensive than continually buying brown bags all school year.
• ___ Warehouse-style stores have the best deals on key essentials like pencils, so consider pairing with other families to buy in bulk. A 100-pack of pencils can cost just pennies when split between many of your child’s classmates.
• ___ Ask your supplies retailer if they have a rewards program in place for schools; many stores do. You may be contributing money to your child’s school just by shopping for the required supplies.
