BankAtlantic and Lighthouse of Broward
Sunrise Branch Helps Campers Use their Senses of Touch and Sound to Explore the World of Banking and the Value of Money.
BankAtlantic's Sunrise store kicked off July by hosting a visit from Lighthouse of Broward, a charity that services the blind and visually impaired. Twenty children from the organization's summer camp program, varying in age from 6-12, participated in the fieldtrip which was a part of the camp's community week where campers visited local businesses.
The day began with a tour of the store. The store's colleagues focused the activities around the camper's senses of touch and sound. The campers received an opportunity to feel the difference in weight of $10.00 worth of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters; their faces lit up with surprise at the weight variances. They also took turns feeding coins into the change exchange machine and listening to it calculate the deposit.
The children were taught about the value of money and various banking careers. They also learned important banking tools such as how to identify monetary denominations and about the Kid Power program. Each camper also received a Seven bank, which already contained a quarter, to start saving for a Kid Power account.
The enthusiasm, participation, and sense of Community from the Sunrise store colleagues played an important role in the success of this fieldtrip.
